It was winemaker K.K. Carothers' first vintage back at Bryant after a short stint at Adamvs. She certainly made the best of the short time she had with the vineyard that year. One of the developments at Bryant has been a move towards smaller picks, which seems to give the wines an extra degree of precision. The month of June turned out to be the warmest since 2003, causing poor fruit set in some plots. There was a heat wave at the end of June and through the first week of July, causing sunburn in places and rainfall was minimal. With the exception of a few light showers, August was dry and sunny.

We began to pick in Puligny Montrachet on the 28th and 29th of August, following with the whites in Morey Saint Denis on the 31st. Fermentations were spontaneous and easy.

Phenolic maturity was excellent. There were substantial tannins in the reds thanks to thick grape skins, and they were of the highest quality. Due to these high tannin levels, we were cautious with extraction. Punch-downs were few and very gentle. The final alcohol levels were normal, well balanced by the substantial extract and fruit density. There is freshness and poise too.

Tartaric acidity was good, with low malic, due to the July heat, meaning malolactic fermentation was generally swift and uncomplicated. On the palate it is powerful, rich, and opulent, with tightly woven, sweet, polished tannins balanced perfectly by acidity, which leads into a long finish marked by elegance and freshness.

2016 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 'Cuvee Vieilles Vignes', Cote de Nuits, France

Classification : Appellation Grand Cru Clos de la Roche

Target return: 30 hectolitres/Ha

Production area: 3.2 Ha

Average production : 10.000 bottles

Average age of vines : 65 year

Variety : Pinot noir

Planting density : 11 000 vines per hectare

Soil type : Lean, clayey soil with limestone scree
on a base of fine limestone from Premeaux and
from Comblanchien

Vine management : Reasoned Culture, cord pruning

Harvest : Manual harvest, sorting in the vineyard

Winemaking :Destemmed harvest and fermentation in vats
thermoregulated wood. Some frosts in April helped to control the budding and created the natural conditions for lower production. In May the temperatures rose gradually alternating with mild but rainy days. By early June the summer had effectively began with high temperatures, though below the seasonal average, accompanied by well timed sporadic precipitations. This offered cooling and water supply to the vineyards. Optimal weather and summer climate conditions continued until the harvest. Likewise the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked from early September until about a month later. The last grapes to be harvested came from the vineyards of Castiglioncello di Bolgheri situated at about 350 meters above sea level. The grapes ripened perfectly with no millerandage, which resulted in a great harvest. Wine making: A very gentle crushing and de-stemming of the grapes was followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats (at 30° - 31° C and only using the vineyard’s native yeast). The maceration on the skins lasted 9 to 12 days for both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon with frequent pumpovers of the musts and délestages. The tannins show polish and power in the same moment, offering a glimpse of the wine as it may evolve in the coming years and decades.

Harvested completely by hand at night, between September 24 through October 19, 2018, this wine is entirely grown on the J.J. Cohn Estate in Rutherford, Napa Valley. The berries were destemmed, optically sorted, and fermented in small batches. After approximately 24 days on skins the fruit was gently pressed and transferred to French Oak barrels, of which roughly 80% were new barrels. The juice was kept in these barrels for about 10 months, then assessed for quality before the first assemblage was created in summer 2019 and the blend was finalized in January 2020. After a total of approximately 22 months in French oak, the wine was bottled in late July 2020 without fining or filtration. A total of 1800 cases were produced.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0551/4310/4704/files/2018_Scarecrow_Cabernet_Sauvignon_Rutherford_Napa_Valley_bottle_front.jpg?v=1756908381
