TERROIR
The Grand Enclos de Las Cases contains a lot of complexity. Originating mainly from graves of the Quaternary on gravel sables and large underground, there is also more or less deep and compact clay, sometimes even affluent. The proximity of the Gironde is responsible for this great diversity of soils, created over the course of geological periods by successive superpositions. In addition, the river generates a very specific microclimate that allows for a very early ripening of the grapes and protects the vineyard from frostbite. This combination of geological combinations influences the development of the vineyard and the constitution of the grapes. This unparalleled terroir gives the great wine its unique personality.

MILLESIME 1989
The flowering took place early following a hot month of May.
The summer was sunny and followed by a very beautiful month of September which allowed to harvest each grape at its optimal maturity.

Assembly Cabernet Sauvignon 60% Merlot 25% Cabernet Franc 12% Small Verdot 3%

Harvest Date 5 to 25 September 1989

Degree: 13.30% vol. / Total Acidity: 3.72 gH2SO4/l

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

One of the most youthful wines of the vintage, the 1989 Léoville Las Cases unwinds in the decanter and glass with aromas of blackcurrant and pencil shavings, framed by a discrete patina from its aging in oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and tightly wound, it's impressively pure and vibrant, though it lacks the mid-palate plenitude of the vintage's best wines, displaying a touch of tannic asperity on the finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see it continue to improve with further aging, though my sense is that the Cabernet Sauvignon might have been picked a little prematurely in this vintage.
