2014 Opus One – Harmony and Precision from Napa Valley

The 2014 Opus One captures the elegance and depth that have defined this estate’s partnership between Napa Valley and Bordeaux. Founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One represents the seamless fusion of French tradition and California innovation. The 2014 vintage stands out for its purity and grace—an exemplary expression of balance and refinement in a near-perfect growing season.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet reveals layers of blackberry, cassia, and violet, complemented by notes of graphite, mocha, and fresh tobacco. The palate is silky and expansive, offering dark fruit, polished tannins, and a lingering finish marked by minerality and poise. This vintage strikes an ideal harmony between opulence and structure.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

Composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec, the 2014 vintage was meticulously vinified in small lots before aging for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The Opus One estate, situated in the western reaches of Oakville, benefits from the moderating influences of marine fog and alluvial soils that yield fruit of extraordinary balance and purity.

Investment & Collectibility

Recognized as one of Napa’s most collectible wines, the 2014 Opus One reflects both pedigree and precision. With its impeccable reputation and limited global distribution, it continues to be a cornerstone for collectors of Napa Valley wines and California Cult Wines. Perfect for your collection.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Deep garnet colored, the 2014 Opus One opens with youthful notes of warm blackberries, chocolate-covered cherries, redcurrant jelly and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bay leaves, tobacco leaf and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with a lively backbone and tightly wound black and red berry layers, it finishes with a compelling herbal lift. During my recent visit to Opus One, I tasted five vintages of the "grand vin," including a barrel sample of the 2019, which will be published separately in a dedicated report. Comparing the 2018 vintage with 2019, winemaker Michael Silacci commented, "There’s a little more richness to 2019. 2018 is elegant, and that's not an excuse for being lighter. I like the intensity of the 2018s—2019 is a bit above it. 2018 was cooler with a little bit more acidity." Both vintages are a triumph at Opus One and a testament to the subtle changes that Silacci and his team have been conducting in the vineyards and winery over the last 15+ years. Bravo! Vinous

The 2014 Opus One is not as showy or obvious as some of the other surrounding vintages, but it will have its day. Stylistically, the 2014 is bright and also a touch linear, with a construction built more on focus rather than opulence. Readers should plan on giving the 2014 another few years in bottle at a minimum. The mid-weight style is a bit Old World-leaning in this striking, super-classic Opus One. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni.
