The 2013 Screaming Eagle Second Flight offers a rare glimpse into the extraordinary terroir of Oakville, Napa Valley. Produced in tiny quantities by California’s most coveted winery, Second Flight (now known simply as "The Flight") is a Bordeaux-inspired blend that balances power with grace. The 2013 vintage, one of Napa’s finest in recent memory, delivered a wine of striking purity, complexity, and age-worthy structure.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet reveals perfumed aromas of blueberry, violet, and cassis, interwoven with hints of tobacco leaf, graphite, and subtle cocoa. The palate is rich yet elegant, showcasing layers of dark fruit, spice, and polished tannins. A mineral-driven finish underscores the estate’s hallmark finesse and the vintage’s impeccable balance.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

The 2013 Second Flight is crafted primarily from **Merlot**, blended with **Cabernet Sauvignon** and **Cabernet Franc** from the Screaming Eagle estate vineyard. Fermented in small tanks and aged in new French oak barrels for nearly two years, the wine mirrors the meticulous standards applied to the flagship Screaming Eagle bottling. The Oakville terroir—defined by gravelly, well-drained soils—imparts both power and elegance.

The 2013 Screaming Eagle Second Flight is a highly collectible release, with limited production and exceptional critical acclaim. As part of Napa Valley’s cult wine heritage, it continues to gain recognition among serious collectors for its combination of pedigree and accessibility. Perfect for your collection.

Moving to the 2013s, the 2013 Second Flight is more powerful than the 2014 yet doesn’t lose a beat with regards to elegance and purity. A blend of 65% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, its deep purple color is followed by terrific notes of black cherries, spice-box, chocolate, and violets nuances. From a vintage that has a compressed harvest and tiny yields, this beauty is full-bodied, has beautiful purity and a finesse-driven, elegant slant that makes it a joy to drink. It will keep for 15-20 years. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck, Issue date: December 29, 2017. Drinking window: 2018 - 2038.

Rating (96+) Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Second Flight simply sings of spiced blueberries, black forest cake and preserved plums with suggestions of star anise, baker’s chocolate, fertile loam and dried Provence herbs with a hint of lavender. Big, concentrated, full-bodied and packed to the gills with black fruits, exotic spice and floral layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of layers. Still very taut, it needs at least another 2-3 years in bottle. Interestingly, this full-on hedonistic vintage has one of the largest Merlot contributions ever for this wine: 65% Merlot with 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Cabernet Franc. Rating (98+) The 2013 Screaming Eagle remains a very young wine. Dark, brooding and quite potent, the 2013 possesses tremendous depth backed by equally serious tannins. Blackberry, graphite, lavender, mocha and dried herbs are some of the many nuances that gradually open in the glass. In most years, Screaming Eagle has a Lafite-like purity of fruit. The 2013 has plenty of that, but the tannin profile and somber feel remind me more of wines like Montrose or an imposing vintage of Mouton, like the 1986. Readers lucky enough to own the 2013 are in for a real treat, but I would not think of touching a bottle anytime soon, as it remains an infant. Two recent bottles were nothing short of spectacular.
