Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Italy

WINE STORY

Tenuta Nuova, meaning “New Farm,” was literally a groundbreaking project by Casanova di Neri to develop an area in the Brunello di Montalcino denomination that had not been planted with Sangiovese before. The ridge, covered with Mediterranean maquis shrubs, was originally owned by a shepherd, but proved to be too rocky for good grazing. The Neris, however, saw great promise for vineyards. They planted Le Cetine vineyard with vines cut from the winery's exceptional Cerretalto vineyard, and implemented the highest standards of viticulture in the vineyards. Ultimately, the Neris' faith in the area has been validated by the exceptional quality of the Tenuta Nuova Brunello.

This is a gorgeous wine. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is just as impressive now as when I first tasted it three years ago. The only edit I would make to my original 100-point review is an extension to the drinking window. The bouquet is absolutely seamless, yet it shows pencil-point precision with dark fruit that flows into spice, tobacco and crushed mineral. The wine's aromatic intensity is forthright and compelling, as is the polished and fine nature of the mouthfeel. This is a cellar keeper. Reviewed by Monica Larner, Issue date February 28, 2018. Vinous

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova from Casanova di Neri opens with a gorgeous blast of dark fruit, mocha, spice and new leather. The first impression is quite positive, but then the wine loses its persistence on the mid-palate and finish. It’s as if the wine is hollow; there just isn’t a whole lot of depth. The tannins also show a distinct element of astringency and torrefaction, like coffee beans that have been over-roasted. Time in the glass only brings out these qualities further. To be sure, these shortcomings are in some ways quite subtle, but it is precisely the details that separate the excellent from the truly great. Tasting some of the other wines made in a similar style only highlights the areas where the Tenuta Nuova is lacking. The 2010 isn’t a bad wine, but it could have been something more.
