2005 Chateau Leoville Las Cases Grand Vin de Leoville – A Benchmark from Saint Julien

The 2005 Chateau Leoville Las Cases stands as one of the defining wines of this remarkable Left Bank vintage. Sourced from the historic L’Enclos vineyard at the heart of Saint Julien, this Grand Vin reflects the estate’s reputation for precision, structure, and a level of complexity that has long placed it among the elite wines of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes

The wine opens with layered aromas of cassis, graphite, cedar, and tobacco. The palate delivers exceptional concentration, marked by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that frame dark berry fruit, savory spice, and subtle mineral notes. The finish is long and tightly focused, showing the power and refinement that have earned the 2005 vintage legendary status.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with small proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the Grand Vin is drawn from deep gravel soils that enhance its purity and longevity. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels. The estate’s meticulous vineyard work and strict fruit selection shape a wine known for precision and age-worthiness.

Investment & Collectibility

The 2005 Leoville Las Cases is widely regarded as one of the estate’s greatest modern releases. Its consistent performance at auction, combined with the prestige of the vintage, ensures continued demand among collectors seeking top-tier Bordeaux with long-term cellaring potential.

Vintage Insights & Accolades

The 2005 growing season was warm and even, producing fruit of outstanding concentration and balance. Critics frequently rank this vintage among the strongest in recent decades, noting its power, clarity, and long-lived structure.

Still inky hued and not yet in its prime, the 2005 Château Leoville Las Cases is nevertheless jaw dropping good, and certainly a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion. Cassis, ripe currants, leather, graphite, crushed stone, and smoke all define the aromatics, and it has a massive, full-bodied profile on the palate as well as the more focused, regal style of the Chateau. There’s no shortage of tannins, it has incredible purity, integrated acidity, and a monster of a finish. It actually has a touch of Latour-like character, and it needs another 4-6 years, if not a decade, to hit prime time, and will have 30 years of longevity. The 2005 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, representing only 37% of the total production. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck, Issue date: April 2024. The 2005 Léoville Las Cases is a classic that numbers among the wines of the vintage in the Médoc. Wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries, cassis, incense, burning embers, sweet soil tones, dark chocolate and cigar wrapper, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a vibrant core of fruit, lively acids and sweet, powdery tannins. More elegant and refined than the hulking, uncompromising 2006, the 2005 is nevertheless a powerful, tightly wound wine that will reward further bottle age, even if it's actually quite expressive today. A wine for the ages, the 2005 Léoville Las Cases is slow to come out of the gate, but its beauty and pedigree are evident. The 2005 Las Cases is one of the only wines in this tasting that still needs time in bottle, something that won't come as a surprise to fans of this St. Julien estate. The 2005 offers plenty of the typical Las Cases power, but it is also remarkably nuanced and translucent for a wine of its sheer size. When all is said and done, it is in my top three or four wines of the night. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni, Issue date: October 2015. Drinking window: 2020 - 2045.
