2002 Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir – Pioneering Expression of Sonoma Coast Terroir

The 2002 Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir is a benchmark bottling from one of California’s most elusive and influential estates. Produced by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer, this vintage reflects early mastery of Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast before the region's explosion onto the global stage.

Tasting Notes

Now mature, the wine opens with a layered bouquet of forest floor, black tea, and dried cherry, framed by notes of baking spice, , and truffle. The palate remains vibrant with well-integrated acidity, soft tannins, and a savory finish that lingers with hints of cranberry compote and faded rose petals. A truly age-worthy Californian Pinot that delivers complexity without excess.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

This bottling comes exclusively from Marcassin’s estate vineyard, perched on the true Sonoma Coast, planted to low-yielding heritage clones. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in 100% new French oak, the 2002 Pinot Noir spent extended time in barrel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered—a Turley hallmark prioritizing purity and texture.

Collectibility & Cellaring

Marcassin remains one of the most sought-after names among California Cult Wines, with production rarely exceeding 300 cases per cuvée. The 2002 vintage is drinking at peak now, making it ideal for collectors looking to experience fully resolved Marcassin Pinot in its prime. Perfect for your collection.

Vintage Insights

2002 was a strong growing year on the Sonoma Coast—long, even ripening, moderate temperatures, and cool marine influences helped preserve acidity while allowing full phenolic development. The result was wines of concentration and elegance, with serious aging potential.

I have always felt that top vintages of Marcassin Pinot Noir have a resemblance to a Ponsot Clos de la Roche from a great vintage. While some may say that-s impossible, I have bought and drunk enough of Ponsot-s Clos de la Roche and Marcassin-s Pinot Noir to have confidence in making that observation. Moreover, the rumor from numerous top Pinot producers about the origin of the Dijon clones being Ponsot old vine material adds to my convictions. The 2002 Marcassin Estate Pinot Noir exhibits a dense plum/purple color to the rim in addition to a compelling bouquet of raspberry jam, black cherries, Asian spice and the tell-tale forest floor note which is clearly a characteristic of the Burgundian clones used at Marcassin. Full-bodied, opulent, multilayered and built like a skyscraper with a silky texture, this profound effort is one of the greatest Pinot Noirs ever made in the New World. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years, but there is no need to defer your gratification. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr. Issue date: June 2014. Drinking window: N/A.

Vinous

(Rating 95+). Full, bright red-ruby. Knockout nose of raspberry, flint, spices, licorice and mocha; higher-pitched than the Blue Slide. Then big, broad, spicy and uncompromisingly dry; a voluptuously round, large-scaled pinot that's not yet as flamboyant as the Blue Slide. The most tannic of these 2002 pinots, but the tannins are outlasted by powerful, spicy fruit and mineral flavors. These wines have the texture and weight-not to mention complexity-of grand cru Burgundy. Reviewed by Stephen Tanzer. Issue date: May 2005. Drinking window: N/A.
