2001 Chateau Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France

2001 was a rather dry year without excessive heat. The wines are complete, with freshness, a complex and bright fruitiness and a beautiful tannic structure.

Weather conditions

  • First 4 months of the year mild and rainy, except February which was dry.
  • Precipitation and temperatures close to normal values for the period April – September.
  • Very heavy precipitation in July (125 mm), low in August and September. August was hot (+1.6 °C) and September rather cool (-2.2 °C).
  • End of maturation and harvest in very good climatic conditions.
  • Classic year with a climatology close to the norms for the Bordeaux climate.

Vine cycle

  • Despite early budding, the growing cycle was delayed from flowering onwards, a delay which continued until the harvest.
  • Very low Botrytis pressure.
  • Good weather conditions in August and September allowed very good maturity to be achieved.
  • Harvest from September 24 to October 8 (spread over 15 days).
  • Yield: less than 36 Hl/ha.

Winemaking

The main lines of winemaking at Cheval Blanc are based on cool maturation of the grapes, vinification as close as possible to the plot, gentle extraction, long maceration, manual pumping over and a single rack and return during 4 weeks of vatting.

Château Cheval Blanc 2001 is aged for 16 months with 100% new barrels.

Le Petit Cheval is aged in 50% new barrels and 50% barrels of one wine, from the same coopers, for 16 months as well.

Tasting comment
Dark red color, with the beginning of evolution.
Intense nose, dominant red fruits, sloe, wild berries, blackberry, blackcurrant, finely woody.
Vine attack, lots of volume in the mouth, structured and harmonious wine. The mid-palate is distinguished by a bright fruit. The woodiness is very smooth. Length at the end of the mouth with a good tannic presence. Lots of freshness with a mentholated evolution. Very harmonious.

I was surprised by how soft, opulent, even voluptuous the 2001 Cheval Blanc performed out of bottle as this estate’s wines tend to shut down when young. Its deep ruby/purple color was accompanied by sweet aromas of cranberries, black currants, menthol, Asian spices, and underbrush. This seductive blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc reveals a lush sweetness, medium body, and ripe, well-integrated tannin. A racy effort filled with personality, it should be at its finest between 2007-2018. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr, Issue date: June 30, 2004. Drinking window: 2007 - 2018.

Vinous

The 2001 Cheval Blanc has a slightly more expressive and less feral bouquet compared to the 2000, perhaps better defined, although I miss the menthol aspect that develops on the previous vintage. But give it an hour's aeration and it coheres magnificently, gaining more intensity as it manifests dark berry fruit mixed with potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm and (for this estate) quite austere and strict, though yet again, after an hour it mellows, gaining more rondeur and sensuality. Whereas initially I leaned toward the millennial Cheval Blanc, the 2001 has its nose in front by the end. Tasted at Cheval Blanc. Reviewed by Neal Martin, Issue date: June 2021.
