2018 Sine Qua Non 'Profuga' – California’s Visionary Grenache

The 2018 Sine Qua Non 'Profuga' Grenache is a bold and visionary release from one of California’s most avant-garde producers. Manfred Krankl’s Sine Qua Non has built an international reputation for redefining Rhône varietals in California, producing wines of unparalleled individuality and limited availability. 'Profuga' embodies the estate’s meticulous winemaking, artistic sensibility, and commitment to crafting collector-worthy wines.

Tasting Notes

The wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe raspberry, pomegranate, and violets, layered with hints of peppercorn, graphite, and exotic spice. On the palate, it is concentrated yet refined, showcasing flavors of black cherry, plum compote, and dark chocolate. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity lead to a long, expansive finish with remarkable freshness for such a powerful Grenache.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

'Profuga' is composed primarily of Grenache, blended with a small proportion of Syrah and other Rhône varietals. Grapes are sourced from Sine Qua Non’s estate vineyards, including Eleven Confessions and Cumulus, where diverse soils and meticulous farming practices produce fruit of extraordinary intensity. The wine was aged for around 23 months in French oak barrels, a combination of new and neutral, before bottling without fining or filtration.

Investment & Collectibility

The 2018 Sine Qua Non 'Profuga' Grenache is one of the estate’s most acclaimed bottlings, released in highly limited quantities to an exclusive mailing list. With critical acclaim and a reputation for aging gracefully, it is an essential addition for collectors of California Cult Wines and Rhône-inspired reds. Perfect for your collection.

Vintage Specifics & Accolades

The 2018 vintage in California was marked by a long, temperate growing season, producing wines with extraordinary balance, aromatic lift, and purity of fruit. Sine Qua Non’s 'Profuga' Grenache captures this vintage at its very best.

The 2018 Grenache Profuga is composed of 77.5% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 8.3% Syrah, 3.3% Petite Sirah and 0.9% Viognier. The vineyard sources are 38% Cumulus Estate, 35% The Third Twin Estate, 23% Eleven Confessions Estate and 4% Bien Nacido vineyard. Forty-one percent whole cluster was performed, predominately on the Grenache. The small proportion of Viognier was co-fermented with red grapes, but interestingly, because it ripens earlier, the white berries are frozen and added to the reds at the time of fermentation. As an added bonus, these frozen grapes help to cool and, therefore, slow the fermentation. The wine was aged for around 23 months in 37% new French oak, 57.8% used oak and 5.2% concrete. It was bottled on July 29, 2020. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is a mélange of fresh black cherries, boysenberries, red roses and raspberry leaves with hints of cracked pepper, dusty earth, bay leaves and aniseed. The concentrated, full-bodied palate possesses the most gorgeous silken texture, nonetheless delivering a solid backbone including a lively line of freshness, finishing with epic length and lots of spicy fireworks. Vinous

The 2018 Grenache Profuga is a rich, heady wine. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice and scorched earth give the 2018 its distinctly dark, brooding personality. Tasted next to the 2018, the 2019 is quite a bit darker and more potent. This large-scaled, full-throttle wine will benefit from at least a few years in bottle.
