1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild – Pauillac First Growth with Signature Opulence

The 1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild exemplifies the richness and flamboyance that have made Mouton one of the most distinctive First Growths of Pauillac. Known for its expressive style and artistic labels, Mouton’s wines are as collectible as they are age-worthy, with the 1998 vintage standing as a fine example of Left Bank Cabernet from a Right Bank-favored year.

Tasting Notes

The 1998 Mouton reveals opulent aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and coffee bean, accented by hints of graphite, tobacco, and exotic spice. On the palate, it offers layers of ripe cassis, mocha, and plum, wrapped in velvety tannins. The finish is long and complex, reflecting both the estate’s power and Pauillac’s classic minerality.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

The 1998 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels, a Mouton hallmark that enhances its plush texture and exotic aromatics. The estate’s deep gravel soils contribute structure, while meticulous vineyard management ensures concentration and finesse.

Investment & Collectibility

As a First Growth Bordeaux, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild holds a special place in any collector’s cellar. While overshadowed by Right Bank wines in this vintage, Mouton produced one of the strongest Left Bank efforts. Its rarity, critical acclaim, and iconic label design make it a coveted acquisition. Perfect for your collection.

Vintage Specifics & Accolades

The 1998 Bordeaux vintage was widely considered a Right Bank year, yet Pauillac produced Cabernet-based wines of power and charm. Mouton distinguished itself with concentration and aging potential.

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild comes from a vintage that saw beautiful early season weather but rain in September and October that made the vintage more complicated for the Médoc and Graves region. A more medium to full-bodied effort, it has terrific complexity in its red and black currant fruits as well as smoked tobacco, loamy earth, spice box, and chocolate. Balanced, elegant, and silky on the palate, its oak is perfectly integrated, it has fine tannins, and it’s smack in the middle of its prime drinking window. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild is deep garnet-brick in color with lovely crème de cassis, dried roses, hoisin and baking spice notes with underlying notions of dried cherries and mulberries plus touches of wood smoke, incense and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and packed with rich fruit framed by firm, chewy tannins, it is stacked with complex, evolving flavors and finishes with incredibly long-lasting perfumed notes. According to winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, this needs about three hours of decanting at this stage. I simply love the place this wine is in right now, possessing plenty of mature, tertiary characters yet still sporting bags of fruit. It won’t be fading anytime soon either and should cellar nicely for 20-25+ more years. Reviewed by: Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Issue date: May 2018. Drinking window: 2018 - 2043.

The 1998 Mouton Rothschild is another wine that I had not tasted for several years. It is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Compared directly with the 1988, there is clearly some improvement for the bouquet is fresher with greater complexity - blackberry, cedar, a spring of fresh mint and a little juniper berry for good measure. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. Like many Pauillac 1998s, this feels quite structured and masculine, but at least there is adequate fruit tucked in just behind. It segues into a rather ferrous last third, fresh and precise with a sustained finish. Although it lags behind more recent vintages under Dhalluin, it appears to be at its peak after 20 years and should remain there for another decade. Tasted at the château.
