2014 Domaine du Clos de Tart 'Clos de Tart' Grand Cru Monopole, Cote de Nuits, France

Summary of the Vintage

Despite changeable weather throught the season, this is a charming vintage. Due to a mild winter and equally warm spring (+1.6°C higher than average temperatures in the first six months), bud break was early (27th March) and vegetative growth continued at a rapid pace. Uncommonly good conditions early June similarly lead to an early flowering (4th June). Clos de Tart fortuitously avoided the hail storm of 28th June that struck some estates in the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. July and August were cold with significant cloud cover which slowed down the ripening of the grapes. Thankfully, a brisk North wind in September brought with it dry, sunny and cool weather enabling the grapes to reach maturity in optimal conditions. We started harvesting on 18th September and finished 5 days later.

Tasting Notes

2014 is a charming and elegant vintage in which Pinot Noir really shows its ability to give great wines despite the difficult conditions. This Clos de Tart is intensely aromatic with red fruits and spices on the nose. It has a lovely freshness on the palate with ripe tannins.

A sensational 2014 by Sylvain Pitiot and Jacques Devauges, the 2014 Clos De Tart Grand Cru is an incredibly perfumed, elegant wine that shines for its complexity, texture, and length. Beautiful black raspberries, spice, damp underbrush, sous bois, and spice aromas and flavors all flow to a medium-bodied effort that has no hard edges, perfect balance, and polished, yet present tannin. With surprising length and building tannin, it needs 5-7 years of cellaring and is going to knock your socks off over the coming two decades. Tasting date: March 20, 2018. Drinking window: 2025-2045.

The 2014 Clos de Tart Grand Cru will contain 40% whole bunch fruit in the final. It was picked from September 17 until September 22. This blend that I tasted included the young vines at the bottom of the vineyard that may or may not be deselected to make a Forge de Tart (the decision will be made next year). It is also the first vintage that does not include old vines at the northwest corner that were pulled up in spring 2014, due to be replanted in four years' time. It has a very well defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, fine mineral tones and is quite harmonious with hints of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied and I feel this has tightened up since I tasted it in September 2015. The fruit also seems a little darker. Blackberry and wild cherry, with a hint of cola and certainly more tangible mineralité on the finish, as you can feel the mouth tingling long after it has bid adieu. Reviewed by Neal Martin. The 2014 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, Sylvain Pitiot’s final vintage, was picked from September 5 at 22hl/ha. (Incidentally, this was the first year the vineyard was tended organically.) It has a rich, exotic bouquet of macerated red cherries, black olive compote, fig and crushed violets. There is still some new oak to be subsumed here. The burly, powerful palate is full-bodied with saturated tannin, although it does not possess the delineation or mineralité on the finish that Jacques Desvauges has sought. Tasted at Clos de Tart. Reviewed by Neal Martin. Tasting date: November 2018. Drinking window: 2022-2045.
