GRAND CRU CLASSÉS EN 1855, Premier Cru

1989 Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France

Elegant and complex, Château Haut-Brion red presents mineral aromas and a unique complexity. Its strength lays in the finish, which is surprisingly long. This aromatic persistence is due to its very noble origins.

TASTING NOTES
The wine is very aromatic and harmonious with incredibly
mellowed tannins and quite low acidity. It could be assumed it will be a powerful wine, yet at the same time one with plenty of subtlety and harmony. Through its structure and smoothness, this wine is reminiscent of 1959 both in terms of the weather and the volume of the harvest.

The Weather
An historically early year. Throughout the period of growth, the weather was especially warm, sunny and dry. The conditions were thus ideal for budding, flowering, the véraison (onset of ripening) ripening and the harvest. An outstanding year can only produce an outstanding wine.

A beautifully complex, layered wine that offers everything you could want in a mature Bordeaux, the 1989 Château Haut-Brion reveals a deeper plum hue with a touch of bricking on the rim. This is followed by a textbook Haut-Brion nose of smoky, darker currants, smoked tobacco, cedarwood, truffle, and forest floor. With medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, integrated, silky tannins, and a good spine of acidity, it takes ample air to show at its best, but it's clearly in its prime drinking window. A spectacular wine that only goes from strength to strength, and which ranks among the pinnacles of my birth year vintage, the 1989 Haut-Brion wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries, blackcurrants, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, black truffle, burning embers and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's sumptuous and dramatic, with huge reserves of fruit that are complemented by carnal, savory nuances and framed by melting tannins and ripe acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, the only criticism one can make is that a 750-milliliter bottle simply isn't enough. Reviewed by William Kelley, Issue date: February 2022. The 1989 Haut-Brion is very, very good. All the telltale Haut-Brion signatures of dark fruit, minerals, herbs, gravel and spice are present, but this bottle is lacking the textural opulence and depth of the best examples. Readers who have had the 1989 know what an epic wine it usually is. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni, Issue date: March 2022. Drinking window: 2022 - 2049.
