2007 Vieux Chateau Certan, Pomerol, France

From the winter until the first signs of summer the weather pattern in 2007 was one of very mild temperatures and moderate rainfall. These weather conditions helped bring about an early bud-break in the vines in March and an even, homogeneous flowering at the end of May. After lovely sunny weather in the month of June, July and August were particularly cool and rainy. Fortunately, the pattern of very fine weather which set in from September 9th enabled the grapes to catch up on lost time and reach optimum levels of ripeness in ideal weather conditions.

The Merlot and two Cabernets were harvested between September 17th and 29th. It is this remarkable balance that can be found in the blending proportions: 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, after ageing fourteen months in new barrels, the 2007 vintage of Vieux Château Certan is one of fruit and subtlety.

"It has great ageing potential and can start to be enjoyed in five to eight years, though it will continue to age well for a dozen years or so more in a good cellar."

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Year On tasting, the 2007 Vieux Chateau Certan offers enticing aromas of black fruit, melted tar, mint, rooibos tea and undergrowth—complex and enticing, almost matching L'Eglise-Clinet in terms of sophistication. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the entry and white pepper and cloves on the mid-palate, while the Cabernet component lends structure and a sense of symmetry towards the finish, although it does fade in the glass, whereas the L'Eglise-Clinet "motor" on. This is just beginning to drink now but should last for another 8-10 years. Tasted February 2017. Reviewed by: Neal Martin, Issue date: June 2017, Drinking window: 2017 - 2028.
