1992 Opus One – Rare Napa Valley Cabernet from a Resilient Vintage

The 1992 Opus One marks a compelling expression of Napa Valley in the early 1990s, emerging from a challenging yet ultimately rewarding growing season. This vintage represents the early evolution of one of the most prestigious California collaborations—between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi—and is now increasingly rare in the market.

Tasting Notes

Now over three decades old, the 1992 vintage has matured into a wine of layered complexity. Aromas of dried black cherry, graphite, cedar, and cigar box lead into a palate that still holds tension between earthy forest floor notes and soft black fruit. The tannins are fully resolved, delivering a silky mouthfeel and a long, savory finish with echoes of spice, leather, and aged tobacco.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, with contributions from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, the wine was vinified with a focus on structure and aging potential. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel, followed by 18 months in new French oak, and extensive bottle aging prior to release—hallmarks of Opus One’s traditional yet meticulous approach.

Investment & Collectibility

The 1992 Opus One is becoming increasingly difficult to source in pristine condition, making it a desirable addition to serious Napa collections. Its pedigree and history as an early Mondavi-Rothschild release enhance its value. Perfect for your collection or as a standout in a vertical tasting of California Cult Wines.

Vintage Insights

1992 began with El Niño weather patterns that brought rain and cold during flowering, reducing yields. However, a long, mild summer and favorable harvest conditions allowed for extended hang time, resulting in balanced, structured wines. Compared to blockbuster vintages like 1994, the 1992 offers more finesse and now shows the benefits of time in bottle.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 1992 Opus One, a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot, offers a beautiful dark ruby/purple color, a big, spicy nose of cassis, lead pencil, and smoky oak, round, full-bodied, broad, fat flavors crammed with black fruits, soft tannin, low acidity, and a fleshy, full-bodied finish. This rich wine confirms just how fine these wines have become since the 1990 vintage. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr., Issue date: Jun 30, 1995. Drinking window: n/a.

Vinous

A mélange of dark raspberries, menthol, savory herbs and anise jump from the glass in the 1992 Opus One. The aromas are a little more advanced than the fruit, but the 1992 still has plenty of depth, richness and pure sensuality. Readers may want to give the 1992 a year or two to see if the tannins have a little more sweetness to give. In 1992 the blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot.
