2004 Colgin Cellars Cariad Red Bordeaux Blend, California
Winemaker Notes: 2004 Colgin Cellars
While composing the blend of 54% Cabernet, 28% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch and 10% Petite Verdot from Thorevilos vineyard, we look to capture a truly Bordeaux style blend with California pedigree. In order to make the best blend year after year, we rely on our right bank consultant, Alain Raynaud, to give us his thoughtful insight. Slowly and meticulously we construct the blend together, and the 2004 vintage was no exception.
"Upon release I am impressed with how this wine unfolds to reveal a wealth of depth. This is the magic of a blend. The old cabernet vines from the Madrona Ranch vineyard make a superb backbone for the blend, both aromatically and texturally. When the blend reacts with air, it truly comes alive. Delicious aromas of smoked meats, roast duck, cedar, and rhubarb take over. From time to time, the wine opens up to even more layers of aromas like Asian spices, soy sauce, tree bark and plum sauce. The fragrant perfume and acidity contributed by the Petit Verdot bring freshness to the wine as well as added aging potential. The 2004 "Cariad" is a deliciously plush and rich wine that is soft enough to drink now, but will continue to gain power over the next 25 years. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months, without racking, and was bottled without fining or filtration in March 2006."
