1999 BOND Melbury – The Inaugural Vintage of Napa Valley’s Cult Icon
The 1999 BOND Melbury marks the historic debut of Bill Harlan’s visionary project, BOND Estates. Situated on the eastern hills of Rutherford overlooking Lake Hennessey, Melbury was the first single-vineyard Cabernet to be released under the BOND label, setting the tone for what would become one of Napa Valley’s most collectible portfolios of California Cult Wines.
Tasting Notes
The 1999 Melbury opens with complex aromas of black plum, cassis, and graphite, supported by layers of cedarwood, tobacco, and hints of forest floor. On the palate, the wine reveals a remarkable harmony of ripe fruit, earthy depth, and well-integrated tannins, finishing long with savory spice and mineral lift. At over two decades of age, it has evolved into a beautifully mature expression of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Melbury vineyard, with its steep hillsides and rocky soils, is planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is vinified with precision, using small-lot fermentations before being aged in new French oak barrels for approximately 20 months. The 1999 vintage reflects both the site’s unique terroir and BOND’s commitment to crafting vineyard-designated wines of pedigree and longevity.
Investment & Collectibility
The 1999 BOND Melbury is not only a rare collectible but also a piece of Napa Valley history as the inaugural release of BOND. Its limited production and cult following make it highly sought-after by serious collectors. Perfect for your collection, especially for those curating verticals of Napa’s most exclusive Cabernets.
Vintage Insights
The 1999 Napa Valley vintage was marked by a cool growing season with a late harvest, resulting in structured, age-worthy wines. Melbury’s hillside fruit performed exceptionally well, producing a Cabernet that has aged gracefully and continues to show depth and vibrancy today.
