WINEMAKER NOTES
2018 Sassicaia – A Benchmark Vintage for Italy’s First Growth
The 2018 Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido continues the estate’s legacy as the defining standard of the Super Tuscan category. From its gravelly soils in Bolgheri, Sassicaia has built a reputation that places it in the same echelon as Bordeaux First Growths. The 2018 vintage shows restraint, finesse, and unmistakable aging potential—a true collector’s wine.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 opens with classic aromas of crushed blackcurrant, iron, and florals, backed by layers of wild herbs and tobacco. On the palate, it’s graceful and medium-bodied with notes of red plum, cedar, and a touch of graphite. The tannins are polished yet firm, with precise acidity leading into a long, mineral-driven finish. This is a vintage where elegance takes precedence over raw power.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Sassicaia is grown on the Tenuta’s original 75 hectares of vineyard, planted on stony, alluvial soils that resemble those found in Graves, Bordeaux. The blend is primarily 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged for 24 months in French oak barriques, one-third new. The wine then rests in bottle before release, ensuring integrated structure and aromatic lift.
Investment & Collectibility
Vintage after vintage, Sassicaia remains a cornerstone of fine wine investment. The 2018 is highly regarded for its refined expression and will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 15–25 years. Perfect for your collection, especially for those curating a global cellar of benchmark reds.
Vintage Insights
2018 was a cooler, more classic vintage in Tuscany, offering wines of balance and nuanced aromatics. Compared to the denser 2016 or 2015 vintages, 2018 delivers a Burgundian sense of restraint, making it especially attractive for collectors who value age-worthy structure over early opulence.
