2005 Chateau d'Yquem – Monumental Sauternes from a Historic Bordeaux Vintage
The 2005 Chateau dYquem stands among the most revered modern releases from the legendary Sauternes estate. Known for its meticulous harvesting and extraordinarily low yields, Chateau dYquem produces wines that combine opulence with remarkable precision. The exceptional conditions of the 2005 growing season delivered ideal botrytis development, resulting in a wine of extraordinary concentration and balance.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with aromas of ripe apricot, candied orange peel, honey, and saffron. On the palate, the wine is expansive yet refined, delivering layers of stone fruit, caramelized citrus, and toasted almond. Bright acidity lifts the wine’s natural sweetness, carrying through a long and seamless finish marked by mineral tension and remarkable persistence.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is dominated by Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc harvested through multiple selective passes. Only berries fully affected by noble rot are chosen. Fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels followed by extended barrel aging that develops complexity and depth. The 2005 harvest in Sauternes produced fruit of exceptional richness and purity.
