2004 Chateau Haut-Brion – Classical Balance from Pessac-Leognan
The 2004 Chateau Haut-Brion offers a refined and traditionally styled expression from this historic First Growth. Produced in Pessac-Leognan on the estate’s distinctive gravel and clay soils, the wine emphasizes structure, aromatic complexity, and measured power, highlighting Haut-Brion’s ability to deliver elegance even in cooler, more restrained vintages.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, graphite, and subtle smoke. On the palate, the wine is poised and composed, showing layers of dark fruit, earthy minerality, and gentle spice. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide lift and balance, carrying through to a long, polished finish marked by savory and mineral tones.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small portion of Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is conducted parcel by parcel, followed by aging in new French oak barrels to integrate structure and complexity. The 2004 growing season featured a cooler summer and extended ripening, resulting in wines of clarity and classical proportion.
Investment & Collectibility
While often overshadowed by surrounding vintages, the 2004 Haut-Brion has developed steadily in bottle and remains appreciated for its balance and approachability. Its First Growth pedigree and proven aging trajectory continue to support interest among collectors seeking mature Bordeaux with finesse.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
