2014 Schrader To Kalon – Benchmark Cabernet from Napa’s Grand Cru Vineyard
The 2014 Schrader Cellars To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of Napa Valley’s most hallowed ground. Sourced from the historic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville—long regarded as one of California’s greatest terroirs—this bottling is a definitive expression of modern cult Cabernet. Crafted under the direction of Thomas Rivers Brown, Schrader’s To Kalon series has become synonymous with power, precision, and age-worthy depth.
Tasting Notes
The 2014 vintage opens with cassis, crushed violets, and pencil shavings, followed by layers of black cherry, mocha, and cigar box. The palate is muscular yet refined, with broad tannins wrapped in polished dark fruit. A thread of minerality and freshness carries the long, expressive finish. Texturally seamless, it offers both immediate pleasure and long-term potential.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Fruit for this wine is sourced from select blocks within the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, known for its alluvial soils and exceptional sun exposure. Fermented in small stainless steel tanks and aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud French oak barrels for approximately 20 months, this wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its site-driven character.
Investment & Collectibility
Schrader’s To Kalon Cabernets are released in micro-quantities and regularly earn top critical acclaim, making them prized holdings in any serious collection. The 2014 vintage—balanced, structured, and built for the cellar—continues to grow in prestige as allocations dwindle. Perfect for your collection or long-term vertical building.
Vintage Insights
2014 marked a relatively dry and early-ripening year in Napa Valley, yielding wines of balance, purity, and approachability. In To Kalon, optimal conditions allowed for deep color development, structured tannins, and aromatically lifted Cabernet—one of the strongest vintages of the decade for Schrader.
