Deuxieme Grand Cru

2005 Chateau Montrose, Saint-Estephe, France

Main characteristics of the vintage
2005 Chateau Montrose was known as the year of drought. The water deficit was constant and alarming: by the harvest, the volume of rainfall was less than half the average quantity of the past 30 years. Once more, the clayed sub-soils of Montrose played an important role. On the other hand, the temperature was significantly good, particularly during the summer with a profitable alternation of hot days and cool nights, sign of a very good ripening of the grapes.
2005 impresses by its exceptional power, the amazing pure fruit, and the extraordinary engaging elegance without having the overwhelming charm of the 2003.
Stylistically, very classical and very Bordeaux-like, without austerity.

Period of harvest
September 23rd – October 9th

Blend

  • Cabernet-Sauvignon: 65 %
  • Merlot: 31 %
  • Cabernet franc: 3,5 %,
  • Petit Verdot: 0,5 %

Tasting notes
Dense purple colour, almost black.
Complex nose still shut delivering fragrances of black fruit, spices, chocolate.
Long, full, powerful complex on the palate offering up intermixed aromas of morello, cocoa, liquorice, brown tobacco, and prune.
Great wine. Full and very structured.
Beautiful length with neat and straight tannins.
Great ageing potential.

The 2005 Montrose continues to drink beautifully, with a complex yet powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, black raspberries, new saddle leather, tobacco leaf, and spice. This beauty has a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, a supple style, sweet tannins, and is a charming, layered and ready to go Montrose that has loads to love. It continues to be surprisingly accessible and is a beauty to drink over the coming two decades. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck. Tasting date December 13, 2018. Drinking window: 2018-2038.

Tasted at the vertical in London, the 2005 Montrose came and delivered the goods. This was the best example of the 2005 that I have tasted, perhaps a wine that is going to prove that, the longer wine lovers can resist temptation. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc and .5% Petit Verdot picked between 23 September and 9 October. The bouquet is extremely detailed, displaying more red berry fruit compared to the 2010 Montrose that leans towards black. Graphite and cedar emerge with time, even an unusual floral scent that is uncommon with respect to this property, whilst all the time retaining fantastic focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous tincture on the entry. There are the first signs of secondary notes (dried leaves and bay leaf), but it is the tannic backbone and the precision that really defines this Montrose at the moment. For certain, it is masculine and structured, yet it has enormous potential, perhaps more than was suggested when it was first released? This is for the long term, but you know that already. Tasting date: June 2016. Issue Date: March 31, 2017. Drinking window 2025-2065.

The 2005 Montrose is spectacular. Bright, perfumed and vertically explosive, the 2005 possesses remarkable energy right out of the gate. In 2005, Montrose doesn't quite have the heft that it can, but that actually works to its advantage. Readers will find a wine that marries elegance with power so well. Gravel, dried herb, lavender and mocha lend striking complexity to the dark fruit in this gorgeous, regal Montrose. If anything, the 2005 still needs more time in bottle! Reviewed by Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: April 2021. Drinking window: 2025-2055.
