2016 Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, USA

Our 2016 Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon captures the core of our hillside estate. Layers of vibrant cassis, black cherry, and black currant interplay with savory infusions of graphite, sage, tapenade and tobacco that unfold in unwavering strata. Texturally, the palate displays profound density and minerality, woven with finessed tannin and backed by a brightness, purity and freshness that transcends to a seemingly endless and pure finish.

A true expression of the Pritchard Hill terroir, Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was first released in 1992 and is culled solely from grapes grown on the estate’s 13-acre vineyard. This First Growth wine conveys the long winemaking history of the region, a confluence of climate and soil plus a team of experts committed to nurturing its creation. Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon possesses ethereal aromatics and pure minerality that give focus and energy. The complexity of the site yields unusually dynamic wines for a single varietal. The wines of the mid-90s inform our current, somewhat more restrained approach towards crafting wines that demonstrate structural elegance, balance with good acidity and plush tannins — all elements that make them very age-worthy.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon comes all from the estate on Pritchard Hill and was brought up mostly in new French oak. It’s an extraordinary wine in every aspect, revealing a saturated purple color, full body, thrilling depth and richness, and a classic perfume of crème de cassis, black cherry liqueur, graphite, and an incredibly floral component. This is a majestic Cabernet Sauvignon that grows on you with time in the glass. It offers incredible elegance and purity as well as serious amounts of underlying structure, some subtle oak, and a wealth of tannins. Tasting date: January 31, 2019. Drinking window: 2019-2049.

Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon entirely from the Pritchard Hill estate and aged in 90% new oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple colored and has a disarmingly profound red roses and red and black currant nose with wild blueberries and yeast extract accents plus tapenade, tilled soil, subtle exotic spices and pencil shavings and the faintest waft of lavender. The palate is ethereal in its weight with a medium to full-body supported by firm yet perfectly ripe, grainy tannins structuring the tightly wound savory layers and leading to a very long, fragrant earth finish. So poised, so classy, so Bryant. Bryant Family knocks it out of the park with their lineup of bold, sultry and impeccably polished 2016s. These were tasted in September 2018 with Bettina Bryant and the estate’s new winemaker, Kathryn “KK” Carothers, who had formerly done an internship here before assuming a role at ADAMVS as winemaker. Earlier this year, Carothers returned to Bryant to join the A-Team of Michel Rolland (consulting oenologist) and David Abreu (vineyard manager). Also new this year is a minuscule production (500 bottles only) of the estate’s finest Cabernet Franc, revealing the absolute essence of the perfume and minerality that this very special vineyard has to offer. Bryant's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is majestic. Soaring aromatics and silky, lacy textural nuances speak to finesse above all else. Polished and utterly impeccable, the 2016 builds on the success the estate first reached in 2014 and takes it to a very natural conclusion. Crème de cassis, blackberry jam, chocolate, mint and wild flowers all grace the palate, with impossibly silky, fine tannins that accentuate the wine's pure elegance. So many Napa Cabernets reveal themselves with ease, but the 2016 Bryant is a wine that brings the taster in, and only starts to show all of its cards with time. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: October 2018. Drinking window: 2024-2041.
