2009 Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon – St. Helena Elegance

The 2009 Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon captures the balance and purity that have made Spottswoode one of Napa Valley’s most admired estates. Family-owned since 1972, Spottswoode’s organically farmed vineyards in St. Helena produce wines celebrated for their precision, age-worthiness, and unmistakable sense of place.

Tasting Notes

The 2009 vintage opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, and violets, framed by subtle notes of cedar and mocha. On the palate, it delivers layers of ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and remarkable harmony between power and grace. The finish is long, refined, and mineral-driven — classic Spottswoode elegance.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (60 % new). The organically farmed estate vineyards, situated on alluvial clay-loam soils at the foot of the Mayacamas Range, contribute the hallmark balance of freshness and depth that defines the house style.

Investment & Collectibility

The 2009 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon ranks among Napa Valley’s most collectible wines, revered for its finesse and consistent critical acclaim. With production limited and provenance impeccable, it remains a benchmark of Napa Valley craftsmanship. Perfect for your collection.

Vintage Insights

The 2009 vintage brought an ideal growing season to St. Helena — moderate temperatures and a dry harvest period produced Cabernets of pure fruit, supple texture, and early approachability without sacrificing longevity. The result is a poised and beautifully integrated wine with decades of life ahead.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another dead ringer for a top Bordeaux, offering pure blue fruits and crème de cassis nuances as well as violets, spice box, and flowers. The tannins are polished, the balance is spot on, and it has a terrific mid-palate and a great finish. I’d put this in the early to middle of its drink window and I’d certainly be thrilled to drink a bottle today. Nevertheless, it will continue to deliver the goods over the coming 15-20 years. The blend of the 2009 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, and this was the first vintage to include Petit Verdot. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck, Issue date: December 2021. The deep garnet colored 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon contains 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It slips sensuously out of the glass with the most beautiful notions of warm cassis, redcurrant jelly, chocolate-covered cherries and cigar box plus wafts of incense, cinnamon stick, cardamom, dried lavender and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has exquisitely ripe, finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness lifting all those vibrant fruit and earthy nuances to a very long, mineral-laced finish. Another super-impressive effort, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts stunning depth and sheer power. Black currants, pencil shavings, mocha, incense and melted road tar are all woven together gracefully in this powerful, opulent wine. The tannins remain firm, so another few years of cellaring is a must. There is serious density and sheer power to burn. Today the 2009 is a touch less vibrant than the 2010, but more overt and voluptuous. A brooding, muscular finish rounds things out beautifully. The 2009 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni, Issue date: December 2012. Drinking window: 2019 - 2034.
