2018 Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, USA

The 2018s are some of the very finest wines I have ever tasted at Bryant. It was winemaker K.K. Carothers' first vintage back at Bryant after a short stint at Adamvs. She certainly made the best of the short time she had with the vineyard that year. One of the developments at Bryant has been a move towards smaller picks, which seems to give the wines an extra degree of precision. Carothers gave the 2018s three days of cold soak followed by pump-overs and aeration twice a day, with punch-downs towards the end of the fermentations. The 2018s spent 25 days on the skins, which is about average for the estate. New oak is around 75% across the board.

The flagship 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is pure perfection, and classic, finesse, and structure-driven Napa Cabernet doesn’t get any better. This full-bodied, concentrated effort is more masculine and mineral-laced compared to the prettier Bettina cuvée, yet it still has incredible elegance, building, seamless tannins, no hard edges, and simply nothing out of place. Offing notes of cassis, lead pencil, spice box, crushed stone, and hints of flower, it builds beautifully with air and is a wine that always seems to offer something new every time you come back to the glass. Hats off to proprietor Bettina Bryant and winemaker Kathryn Carothers (aka “KK”) for a legendary Napa Valley Cabernet that will evolve for 30-40 years. Tasting date January 27, 2021.

(Rating 99+) Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in French oak, 75% new, and bottled in July 2020. Very deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock beautifully pure notions of baked plums, blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries and boysenberries with fragrant suggestions of violets, iron ore, tilled soil, tree bark and wild fungi plus a touch of garrigue. The medium to full-bodied palate is very tightly knit with exquisitely pixilated, very fine tannins and great tension supporting the intense, wonderfully nuanced fruits, finishing very long and very minerally. 616 cases were made. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is magnificent. Crème de cassis, graphite, lavender, licorice, espresso and sage infuse the 2018 with striking depth. The tannins are intense, but there is more than enough mid-palate intensity to keep everything in balance. Inky, deep and potent, the 2018 Bryant Estate is off the charts. It is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: February 2021. Drinking window: 2026-2043.
