2001 Chateau Cheval Blanc – Grace and Precision from a Legendary Vintage

The 2001 Chateau Cheval Blanc stands as one of the most refined expressions of this iconic Right Bank estate. Situated on the border of Saint Emilion and Pomerol, Cheval Blanc is renowned for its unique terroir and Cabernet Franc–driven style. The 2001 vintage highlights elegance and balance, offering a wine defined by harmony rather than sheer power.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet is complex and expressive, revealing black cherry, plum, graphite, and floral tones layered with subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is seamless and composed, delivering silky tannins and finely detailed fruit. Notes of cocoa, tobacco, and crushed stone emerge with air, leading to a long, refined finish that underscores the wine’s poise and maturity.

Winemaking & Vineyard Details

The blend is led by Cabernet Franc, complemented by Merlot, sourced from Cheval Blanc’s mosaic of gravel and clay soils. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel with precise extraction, followed by aging in new French oak barrels. The 2001 growing season favored slow, even ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic clarity.

Investment & Collectibility

Among mature Bordeaux, the 2001 Cheval Blanc is regarded as a benchmark for balance and longevity. Its proven aging curve, strong secondary-market demand, and limited availability make it a cornerstone wine for collectors focused on classic Right Bank Bordeaux.

Vintage Insights & Accolades

The 2001 Bordeaux vintage is celebrated for finesse and structure, producing wines that age with exceptional grace. Cheval Blanc is widely cited as one of the standout performers of the year.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

I was surprised by how soft, opulent, even voluptuous the 2001 Cheval Blanc performed out of bottle as this estate’s wines tend to shut down when young. Its deep ruby/purple color was accompanied by sweet aromas of cranberries, black currants, menthol, Asian spices, and underbrush. This seductive blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc reveals a lush sweetness, medium body, and ripe, well-integrated tannin. A racy effort filled with personality, it should be at its finest between 2007-2018. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr, Issue date: June 30, 2004. Drinking window: 2007 - 2018.

Vinous

The 2001 Cheval Blanc has a slightly more expressive and less feral bouquet compared to the 2000, perhaps better defined, although I miss the menthol aspect that develops on the previous vintage. But give it an hour's aeration and it coheres magnificently, gaining more intensity as it manifests dark berry fruit mixed with potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm and (for this estate) quite austere and strict, though yet again, after an hour it mellows, gaining more rondeur and sensuality. Whereas initially I leaned toward the millennial Cheval Blanc, the 2001 has its nose in front by the end. Tasted at Cheval Blanc. Reviewed by Neal Martin, Issue date: June 2021.
