WINEMAKER NOTES
2005 Opus One – A Classical Expression of Napa Valley Balance
The 2005 Opus One reflects a measured, refined side of Napa Valley, shaped by a cooler growing season that favored structure and longevity over sheer power. Produced as a joint vision between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, this vintage emphasizes harmony, precision, and restrained elegance, standing as one of the more traditionally styled releases of the decade.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, and subtle tobacco. On the palate, it shows layered dark fruit supported by firm yet polished tannins and well-integrated acidity. Notes of cedar, cocoa, and dried herbs emerge with air, leading into a composed, persistent finish that highlights balance rather than excess.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, all sourced from the Opus One estate vineyards in Oakville. Each parcel was vinified separately before extended aging in new French oak barrels. The cooler conditions of 2005 allowed for slow, even ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic detail.
Investment & Collectibility
The 2005 vintage is valued by collectors for its classical profile and steady evolution in bottle. While approachable today, it continues to reward cellaring, offering long-term stability and consistent demand within the fine wine market.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 2005 Napa Valley season produced wines with moderate alcohol, strong structure, and refined tannins. At Opus One, these conditions translated into a wine built for graceful aging.
