Premier Grand Cru Classe A

2004 Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France

2004 – « LE SAVOUREUX »

The quite worrying weather conditions at the outset, finally settled down at the end of August and became excellent until mid-October. Slow ripening brought out elegance in these wines. On tasting, they display an opaque robe and black fruit aromas. The tannins are beautifully round. The balance and freshness on the finish sum up all this vintage’selegance.

Harvest: September 30th to October 14th
Blend: 60 % Merlot et 40 % Cabernet Franc
Drink: 2025 - 2035

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

This 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc is one of the strongest wines of the vintage. A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr, Issue date: June 2007. Drinking window: 2009 - 2022.

Vinous

(Rating 92+) (60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc; all of the cabernet franc made the cut for the grand vin Saturated ruby. Brooding, liqueur-like aromas of blackberry, blueberry, kirsch, smoked meat and licorice; just the right side of overripe, like the best Napa Valley cabernets. Then thick, sweet and concentrated, with a wonderfully fine-grained texture and superb lift to its black cherry, dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully fresh, fruit-driven wine, finishing with huge but noble tannins and superb, mounting length. "One of my three or four best wines at Angelus," Bouard maintains. And one of the top 2004 St. Emilions as well. Reviewed by Stephen Tanzer, Issue date: May 2005. Drinking window: N/A.
