TERROIR
The Grand Enclos de Las Cases is blessed with a very complex terroir. Mostly made up of Quaternary gravel on a sandy-gravelly and clayey-gravelly subsoil, we also find clays of varying depths and compactness, sometimes even outcropping. The proximity of the Gironde is responsible for this great diversity of soils, created over the geological periods by successive superimpositions. In addition, the river generates a very specific microclimate which allows the grapes to ripen very early and protects the vineyards from frost. This range of geological combinations influences the development of the vine and the constitution of the grapes. This incomparable terroir offers the great wine its unique personality.

VINTAGE 1982
Weather conditions at the beginning of the growth cycle were simply ideal and led on to hot and sunny conditions through June and July. August was a little cooler with a few welcome rainstorms. The hot weather came back in September with particularly warm nights. The regular Southern winds kept any potential rain away during the harvest period.

Tasted at the domaine, the 1982 Leoville Las Cases is just about pure perfection, and while certainly mature, it has plenty of life ahead of it. Thrilling notes of blackcurrants, kirsch, tobacco leaf, cedar box, menthol, and exotic spices all emerge from this seamless, powerful yet magically elegant Leoville Las Cases. Opening up in the glass, with a smoky, singular character, it's an incredible wine from this terroir that has an almost Latour-like regal quality. As I wrote earlier this year, the 1982 Léoville Las Cases is one of the least evolved wines of the vintage, and this impeccably conserved ex-château bottle was, if anything, even more youthful still. Retaining a saturated ruby-black hue at age 40, it unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis and other dark fruits mingled with notions of pencil shavings and loamy soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular, with an ample core of fruit framed by voluminous, powdery tannins. Rich and concentrated, with an expansive, comparatively low-acid profile, it comes into its own with extended aeration—and with food. Reviewed by William Kelley, Issue date: December 2022. The bottle of 1982 Leoville Las-Cases was sadly out of condition, though fortunately I tasted another example at a private dinner in Bordeaux a few weeks later. To be honest, I have always preferred the 1985 or 1986 to this vintage, and this gives me no reason to change my mind. It has a surliness on the nose that is uncharacteristic of this vintage, tightly wound tertiary scents, melted tar and pencil shavings. The palate is full-bodied with fine grip, dense and quite powerful, yet it is more impressive than pleasurable. The aforementioned vintages have pulled away from the 1982 in recent years, though it remains a very fine Saint-Julien. It just needs to turn its frown upside down. PACKAGING: Our premium wines need optimal temperature consistency, therefore are packaged in EPS foam shippers with gel pack (when needed) and shipped only during ideal weather temperatures.

For OWC (Original Wooden Case) orders, wine bottles will be removed from case and shipped inside a foam shipper box for safety (unless otherwise requested). The wooden case will be shipped separately at Ground service. If faster service is necessary please contact us.

WEATHER HOLD: In adverse temperature conditions, we reserve the right to withhold shipment until ideal temperatures return unless we receive explicit instructions via email to release the wines, voiding any guarantee. We will contact you if a hold is necessary.
