WINEMAKER NOTES
1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild – Pauillac First Growth with Signature Opulence
The 1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild exemplifies the richness and flamboyance that have made Mouton one of the most distinctive First Growths of Pauillac. Known for its expressive style and artistic labels, Mouton’s wines are as collectible as they are age-worthy, with the 1998 vintage standing as a fine example of Left Bank Cabernet from a Right Bank-favored year.
Tasting Notes
The 1998 Mouton reveals opulent aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and coffee bean, accented by hints of graphite, tobacco, and exotic spice. On the palate, it offers layers of ripe cassis, mocha, and plum, wrapped in velvety tannins. The finish is long and complex, reflecting both the estate’s power and Pauillac’s classic minerality.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The 1998 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels, a Mouton hallmark that enhances its plush texture and exotic aromatics. The estate’s deep gravel soils contribute structure, while meticulous vineyard management ensures concentration and finesse.
Investment & Collectibility
As a First Growth Bordeaux, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild holds a special place in any collector’s cellar. While overshadowed by Right Bank wines in this vintage, Mouton produced one of the strongest Left Bank efforts. Its rarity, critical acclaim, and iconic label design make it a coveted acquisition. Perfect for your collection.
Vintage Specifics & Accolades
The 1998 Bordeaux vintage was widely considered a Right Bank year, yet Pauillac produced Cabernet-based wines of power and charm. Mouton distinguished itself with concentration and aging potential.
