2001 Opus One, Napa Valley, USA

Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.

Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.

VINTAGE 2001
Light winter rains followed by warm temperatures in May allowed Opus One’s vines to flower at an even pace, producing small, concentrated berries. The time from bloom to harvest was quite long at 133 days for Cabernet Sauvignon. Excellent and unhurried, the harvest began September 1st and concluded on October 19th. Inky purple in color with undertones of magenta, the 2001 Opus One shows aromas of black currant, black cherry liqueur, plum and fresh vanilla, with hints of graham cracker and black peppercorn. A supple, creamy entry is followed by intense flavors of ripe black cherry, cassis, and dark chocolate, finishing with lingering black fruit and savory spice.

VARIETALS
Cabernet Sauvignon 87%, Merlot 6%, Malbec 3%, Cabernet Franc 2% and Petit Verdot 2%

The 2001 Opus One showed beautifully, with mature yet complex notes of ripe dark fruits, tobacco, lead pencil, and truffly earth. Very Bordeaux-like aromatically as well as on the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, has firm, focused, yet ripe tannins, a terrific sense of elegance, and outstanding length. It’s a classic, impeccably made, fully mature Napa Valley Cabernet to enjoy over the coming decade. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck, Issue date: Febuary 2023. Drinking window: 2023 - 2033

Performing better than it did eight years ago, the 2001 Opus One reveals a classic, French-like style with notes of cedar wood, melted licorice, black currants, roasted herbs and tobacco leaf. While not one of the stars of the vintage, it is a medium to full-bodied, outstanding effort that has reached full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another decade or more. This was a reassuring showing, although vintages over the last five years have been stronger and more powerful, with greater aging potential than the 2001. Reviewed by Robert M. Parker, Jr, Issue date: May 2001. Drinking window: 2011-2021.

The 2001 Opus One bursts from the glass with layers of opulent fruit. Still quite youthful, the 2011 impresses for its elegant, mid-weight personality. Compared to the best wines of this era the 2001 comes across as a bit forward. I imagine the 2001 will drink well for another decade or so, but it won't be super long-lived next to its peers. Still, there is plenty to like here. The 2001 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni , Issue date: June 2013.
