2002 Petrus – A Study in Elegance from Pomerol’s Most Revered Estate
The 2002 Petrus presents a cooler-climate expression from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, delivering a structured and cerebral take on this legendary Merlot-dominant wine. From the clay-rich plateau of Pomerol, Petrus stands as the benchmark for Right Bank precision and longevity. Despite the challenges of the vintage, the 2002 offers a compelling case for collectors seeking rarity and evolution over time.
Tasting Notes
The 2002 vintage opens with restrained yet fragrant aromas of violets, truffle, and crushed red plum, gradually unfolding to reveal earthy depth and delicate spice. On the palate, it’s finely textured, showcasing silky tannins, dried cherry, subtle tobacco leaf, and a wet stone minerality. While not opulent, the wine’s focus and finesse are unmistakable—an intellectual expression of Petrus that rewards patience and contemplation.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Crafted entirely from old-vine Merlot grown on the famed blue clay of the Petrus plateau, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in concrete vats before aging in 100% new French oak for approximately 18–20 months. The 2002 vintage was marked by a cooler, wetter growing season, requiring meticulous vineyard management and strict selection during harvest to achieve balance and purity.
Investment & Collectibility
Though often overlooked beside richer vintages, the 2002 Petrus has quietly developed a loyal following among seasoned collectors who value subtlety and age-worthiness. Its scarcity in the market—particularly in pristine condition—makes it a compelling addition for those curating verticals or filling in rare vintages. Perfect for your collection, especially as a contrast to the 1998, 2000, or 2005 expressions.
Vintage Insights
The 2002 Bordeaux vintage was shaped by a cool summer and late-season rains, demanding precision in vineyard timing. In Bordeaux, Right Bank estates with well-drained soils like Petrus were able to pick in optimal windows, producing wines of elegance rather than power. The vintage is maturing slowly and gracefully, with top wines showing significant improvement over the past decade.
