Cru Classe de Graves

2006 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France

Produced in small quantities, this second wine is a gateway to the world of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion. Its name is a nod to the chapel of La Mission Haut-Brion, built by Lazarist priests in 1698.

The weather: The 2006 vintage is the fruit of a very contrasted climate. During that year, the environmental conditions were changing in a very unusual manner, passing from one extreme to another, throughout the entire year. Fortunately, spring and summer were both in general hot and dry. One hundred seasonal workers laboring day after day for three full months allowed winemaker to wait patiently for the absolute peak of each variety of grape.

The 2006 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is a red wine from the Pessac-Leognan appellation of Bordeaux, France. It is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grapes grown on the estate's vineyards. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, and has a deep ruby color and a complex aroma of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied with ripe tannins and flavors of black fruit, tobacco, and leather, leading to a long and elegant finish. This wine has a great aging potential and can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years.

The 2006 La Mission Haut-Brion is showing very well at age 15, and even though it's still five or six years away from the beginning of its plateau of maturity, it is already quite expressive, wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants mingled with notions of smoke, cigar wrapper, black truffle and loamy soil. Full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, with a richly layered core of fruit framed by an abundance of ripe, powdery tannin, in a blind tasting I suspect many would confuse it with a 2005. Vinous

(RATING 92+) Bright red-ruby. Redcurrant, cherry, iron, brown spices and licorice on the nose. Begins lush, full and generous if not overly sweet, then tightens up with air, showing its rather powerful underlying structure. This sharply delineated wine will need a good seven or eight years in bottle to reveal itself. Reviewed by: Stephen Tanzer, Issue date: July 2010.
