Chateau Canon

Classification

Chateau Canon is a Premier Grand Cru Classé B wine according to the Classification of Saint-Émilion wine, a status it shares with such luminaries as Chateau Ausone and Chateau Cheval Blanc. This classification is not just a label but a testament to the superior quality and expertise that goes into every bottle.

Highlights

  • 100-point scores received for the 2015 and 2016 vintages.
  • Known for its signature finesse and elegance, particularly in its Merlot expressions.
  • Ascended to the Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in 2012, marking a key milestone apart from its classification.

Provenance & Masters Behind the Bottle

Chateau Canon has roots stretching back to the 18th century, founded by Jacques Kanon. The estate has undergone several changes in ownership, culminating in its acquisition by the Wertheimer family, who also own the iconic brand Chanel. The Wertheimer family has invested significantly in both the vineyard and the winery, ensuring a continuity in quality. John Kolasa, a notable name in the Bordeaux wine community, had been at the helm as the winemaker until 2015, creating vintages that capture attention and win over even the most discerning palates.

Vineyard & Craftsmanship

Located on the right bank of the Dordogne, the vineyard's unique limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes contribute to the complex minerality of its wines. A meticulous approach to vineyard management ensures only the best fruit makes it to the winery. The estate comprises a limited 34 acres, enhancing the exclusivity and scarcity of these coveted bottles.

Aging & Investment Value

The winery uses 70% new French oak for aging, imparting the wine with a balanced touch of complexity and longevity. The aging potential is upwards of two decades for peak maturity, making it not just a sensory joy but also a wise financial investment for collectors.
