2021 MacDonald Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, USA

MACDONALD is a partnership between brothers and fourth-generation Napa Valley grape growers, Graeme and Alex MacDonald. Graeme handles the winemaking and vineyard management while Alex is in charge of the business side.

Place:

The property is located within the historic To-Kalon Vineyard, a portion of which was purchased by our family in 1954, who planted the first vines on the property since prohibition.

The vineyard is 15 acres, planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon with vines aged 70 years (the original vines planted by our great-grandparents), 50 years (our grandparent’s block) and 30 years old vines planted by Robert Mondavi. Our family has preserved some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in the Napa Valley.

Located on the apex of a geologic feature called an alluvial fan, the subsoil consists of >90% gravel by volume making it the rockiest site in To-Kalon. The layered gravels create wines of characteristic power, richness and longevity.

We manage the vineyard ourselves with the care and attention to detail taught to us by our grandfather.

Wine:

We began experimenting to develop a unique winemaking style following the sale of the Robert Mondavi Winery in 2004. Our inaugural release of MACDONALD was the 2010 vintage (released in 2013).

We focus on making one wine composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from our 70, 50 and 30 years old vines.

Wine characteristics: Classically styled with black cherry, crème de cassis, black olive, lavender, graphite, pencil shavings, bittersweet chocolate, purity, freshness and balance with fine noble tannins and natural intensity.

Approximately 500 cases produced. We produce only the amount of wine we can make with our own hands.

(Rating 98+) One of the greatest wines made in the vintage, as well as probably one of the most age-worthy, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a dense purple hue to go with quintessential Oakville notes of ripe black fruits, iron, black olive, walnuts, and darker chocolate, with an almost bloody, salty character that develops with time in the glass. It's a massive, dense, yet majestic Cabernet Sauvignon that has flawless balance, building yet perfectly ripe tannins, and the concentration and overall class to warrant 5-7 years of bottle age and evolve for 40+ years in cold cellars. Hats off to the MacDonald brothers for another incredible, magical wine. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck. Issue Date: December, 2023. Drinking window: 2030 - 2065.

Vinous

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunner. Blackberry jam, gravel, incense, tobacco and mocha all build effortlessly in the glass. I can't remember tasting a young MacDonald wine with this much finesse. All the elements are so well balanced. The tannins are there, but they are pretty much buried by the sheer intensity of fruit. The 2021 spent 35-38 days on the skins, a bit on the longer side. One of the recent changes here is earlier blending of the various lots, which could explain the wine's total sense of harmony. This is also the first vintage done with optical sorting, and that may be why the fruit is so pure. Aging is projected to be 20-22 months in barrel, 60-65% new. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni. Issue Date: October, 2022. Drinking window: 2029 - 2043.
