2021 Colgin Cellars IX Estate Syrah, Napa Valley, USA

APPELLATION: Hills overlooking Oakville & Lake Hennessey

ELEVATION: 1100-1400 feet (335-427 meters); 20-30+ degree slope

SOIL: Shallow, well drained soils formed in material weathered from basic igneous rocks. Basalt flows.

VINEYARD: 4 acres (1.6 hectares)

PRODUCTION: 400 cases (4800 bottles)

VARIETAL COMPOSITION: Syrah (2 clonal selections)

The vineyard area from which “IX Estate” Syrah is vinified is 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of extremely rocky iron-rich volcanic soil located in the hills above eastern Oakville. This intensely steep Eastern facing slope is between 1100-1400 feet. Carved out from a much larger parcel, the land that became “IX Estate” vineyard was virgin forest, which was planted in the late 1990s by Ann Colgin and her husband Joe Wender.

Winegrowing Information:
The 2021 growing season yielded fruit extraordinarily rich in character and concentration. A decrease in rainfall in the wintertime, just half of normal, set the stage for a precocious season. The soil warmed earlier, leading vines on an accelerated timeline for the season. Summer unfolded with just one heat event in late June after the summer solstice. The remainder of the season was moderate, but momentum still gained in late summer, leading to a fast- paced harvest in September and October.

As moisture was low in the soil in 2021, it was essential to maintain an awareness of the nutrition of the vines. A healthy soil with adequate nutrients and minerals ensures fruitfulness of the crop and a harmonious ripening of not just the vintage in progress, but also those to follow. Our perennial strategy of ensuring a thriving microbiology in the soils enhanced the success of the 2021 vintage at Colgin. For many years, the use of compost, organic inputs, and annual cover crops that capture nitrogen from the atmosphere for tillage into the soil, have verified that our commitment to organic farming is not just beneficial for our environment, but in 2021, we see it also ensured the sustainability and quality of our crop.

The moderate weather of the season ensured every aspect of nuance in the fruit was well captured. Across all sites, fruit was in impeccable condition. The modest rainfall of the season culminated in the vines producing small berries brimming with flavor and color. The 2021 vintage has appeal in every facet- aroma, texture, and taste, in just the right amounts. Site driven flavors of mineral, flora and fauna are maximized in this vintage, with varietal flavors naturally infused in the wines.

Notes from the Estate:
The 2021 "IX Estate" Syrah combines intensity with a touch of poetry. Captivating mineral and floral notes bring excitement upon first impressions, while juicy blackberry, licorice, and bouquet garni charm the senses. Silky layers of tannin embrace the palate with coating layers, in an unctuous textural experience. A long, aromatic finish lingers with flavors of cocoa nib and wildflowers.

All destemmed and aged in Burgundy pièces from the likes of Damy, François Frères and Ermitage, the 2021 Syrah IX Estate boasts considerable floral and herbal nuances on the nose, along with something akin to rust, corroded iron or blood and layers of black cherry and plum fruit. Full-bodied, rich and velvety in texture, it lacks the finesse and elegance of the 2018, but it pales only in comparison to that beauty, finishing long, with echoes of espresso, licorice and peppery spice. Vinous

The 2021 Syrah IX Estate impresses with its fruit purity and freshness. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon and dried herbs are beautifully articulated in this vibrant, mid-weight Syrah. There's a bit of new oak today, but that will subside over time. This is an exceptionally beautiful vintage for the Syrah, a wine that is as much a wine of IX Estate as it is of varietal character. Seamless, polished tannins wrap up the finish. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni. Issue date: December, 2021. Drinking window: 2026 - 2036.
