2010 Chateau la Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France

Produced in small quantities, this second wine is a gateway to the world of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Its name is a nod to the chapel of La Mission Haut-Brion, built by Lazarist priests in 1698.

TASTING NOTES
The vey deep colour of the wine is indicative of its concentration.
The bouquet is very expansive, redolent of red-berry fruit.
On the palate, this wine has an astonishingly imposing tannic structure for a second wine. It is also dazzlingly fresh, despite its impressive concentration.
A wine full of contrasts: 2010 produced one of the most
concentrated La Chapelle, but also one of the most beguiling.

The weather
A dry year with an arid summer. The weather during the growing season, from early April to late September, was the driest since 1949. This water deficit caused dehydration in the vines, concentrating the grape juice and producing the highest values ever measured, particularly in terms of sugar content. The very cool nights promoted the accumulation of anthocyanins, so the 2010 red wines are the deepest-coloured in recent years.

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 La Mission Haut-Brion has a commanding, profound nose of baked blackberries, boysenberries and warm cassis plus suggestions of candied violets, red roses, chocolate box, cedar chest and smoked meats with a waft of iron ore. Full-bodied, powerful and hedonic, the palate bursts with expressive black fruits and floral sparks, framed by exquisitely ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing with epic length. A real head-turner, this beauty is already very impressive, but for that full WOW experience I would give it another 3-5 years in bottle to blossom.
