1995 Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut – Mature Champagne of Depth and Tension
The 1995 Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut is a compelling example of Champagne crafted for extended aging. R.D., meaning recently disgorged, highlights Bollinger’s philosophy of releasing wines only when they have achieved full complexity on the lees. This mature vintage showcases the house’s signature Pinot Noir dominance, delivering structure, intensity, and precision shaped by time.
Tasting Notes
The nose reveals layers of toasted brioche, dried apple, citrus peel, and roasted nut, accented by subtle spice and mineral tones. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet finely balanced, with a firm backbone of acidity carrying flavors of orchard fruit, almond, and chalk. The Extra Brut style emphasizes clarity and tension, leading to a long, savory finish with remarkable persistence.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Bollinger R.D. is composed predominantly of Pinot Noir, sourced from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay. Extended aging on lees allows the wine to develop depth and texture before disgorgement, while the low dosage preserves freshness and structure. The 1995 vintage benefited from favorable ripening conditions, producing fruit well suited to long maturation.
Investment & Collectibility
Older releases of Bollinger R.D. are highly sought after for their ability to combine maturity with vibrancy. The 1995 vintage offers both historical significance and continued aging potential, making it particularly attractive to collectors focused on aged Champagne with provenance.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1995 Champagne vintage produced wines with structure and longevity, well suited to extended lees aging. Bollinger R.D. stands out for its depth, balance, and expressive evolution.
