Dramatic, even flamboyant, Dujac's 2020 Echezeaux Grand Cru bursts with rich aromas of plums, berries, exotic spices, rose petals and bergamot. Full-bodied, ample and expansive, its fleshy attack segues into a seamless, enveloping mid-palate, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Reviewed by William Kelley, Issue date: January, 2023. The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has closed down a little since bottling, but there remains attractive, brambly blackberry and raspberry fruit; those white pepper and ash-like scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite dense with a little more sappiness than it showed from barrel, albeit without the persistence of the Clos de la Roche. 2020 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France.
The Grand Cru of Les Échezeaux lies to the west and southwest of the Clos de Vougeot, at the mouth of the Combe d'Orveau valley, where the slope is steep (6.5%). The plot ranges in altitude from 277 to 281 meters. The lieu-dit faces southeast.
The reddish-brown soil is 40 to 50 cm thick, with light-colored limestone fragments and chert nodules (chailles).
The substratum underlying Les Échezeaux is very probably composed of Premeaux limestone.
