WINEMAKER NOTES
1998 Chateau Ausone – Legendary Right Bank Bordeaux
The 1998 Chateau Ausone is regarded as one of the defining wines of the vintage and a benchmark expression of Saint-Emilion. Produced from the estate's limestone hillside vineyards overlooking the Dordogne Valley, Chateau Ausone combines centuries of winemaking heritage with one of Bordeaux's most distinctive terroirs. The exceptional conditions of 1998 produced a wine celebrated for its precision, depth, and extraordinary capacity to evolve over decades.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet reveals layers of black cherry, cassis, violet, graphite, cigar box, and crushed stone. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably poised, with finely detailed dark fruit supported by polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Hints of licorice, cedar, and mineral complexity build through an exceptionally long finish that continues to unfold with extended aeration.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is dominated by Cabernet Franc with Merlot, sourced from steep limestone and clay slopes surrounding the historic estate. Low yields, meticulous vineyard management, and careful parcel selection preserve the vineyard's distinctive character. Aging in French oak barrels enhances structure while allowing the purity of the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront.
Investment & Collectibility
The 1998 vintage is considered one of the greatest modern releases from Chateau Ausone and remains highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Exceptional critical acclaim, limited production, and proven longevity continue to support strong demand in the fine wine market, particularly for well-preserved bottles with documented provenance.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1998 Bordeaux vintage excelled on the Right Bank, where ideal late-season conditions produced wines of exceptional concentration, balance, and aging potential. Chateau Ausone is widely recognized as one of the vintage's finest achievements.
