1995 Ducru-Beaucaillou – A Structured Classic from Saint-Julien
The 1995 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou captures the essence of Saint-Julien’s Left Bank finesse with its hallmark balance of structure, precision, and longevity. As one of the most historically respected Second Growths, Ducru-Beaucaillou stands among the Médoc’s elite, offering both pedigree and consistency across decades.
Tasting Notes
Now entering its prime drinking window, the 1995 reveals a bouquet of dried blackcurrants, cedar box, and graphite, layered with tertiary notes of worn leather and sweet tobacco. The palate remains firm yet silky, with refined tannins and a mineral-driven finish that reflects its gravelly terroir. A beautifully composed wine with both gravitas and subtle charm.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Situated along the Gironde estuary, Ducru-Beaucaillou is famed for its deep Günzian gravel soils (“beaux cailloux” or “beautiful pebbles”). The 1995 vintage is a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, matured in oak barrels (50–70% new) for approximately 18 months. The estate’s stringent selection and élevage methods lend themselves to both purity and aging potential.
Investment & Collectibility
The 1995 vintage marks a turning point in Bordeaux’s modern renaissance and offers exceptional long-term value. With over 25 years of development, this bottle holds significant appeal for collectors seeking well-stored examples from benchmark vintages. Perfect for your collection, especially for those curating rare wines or verticals of Ducru-Beaucaillou.
Vintage Insights
1995 was one of the most successful post-1990 vintages in Bordeaux, delivering wines with ripe tannins, solid acidity, and excellent structure. In Saint-Julien, conditions favored Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in deeply etched, cellar-worthy wines like this Ducru-Beaucaillou. Properly stored, it continues to evolve gracefully with years ahead.
