Tasting Notes
The 2023 La Forge de Tart reveals an expressive bouquet of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by violet, delicate floral perfume, and subtle spice. Undertones of forest floor, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone contribute additional complexity. The palate is medium to full-bodied, displaying concentrated red and dark berry fruit supported by fine, velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. A subtle mineral character adds precision and depth, leading into a long, elegant finish with lingering notes of red fruit, savory spice, and limestone.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
La Forge de Tart is produced from younger Pinot Noir vines within the historic 7.53-hectare Clos de Tart vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis. Although sourced from Grand Cru vineyard land, the wine is classified as Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, reflecting the estate's rigorous selection standards. The vineyard's complex clay-limestone soils contribute to the wine's aromatic definition, mineral character, and refined structure.
For the 2023 vintage, approximately 25% of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters, enhancing floral complexity and texture. Individual vineyard parcels were carefully vinified before maturation in oak and ceramic vessels. The estate's evolving approach to oak integration and gentle extraction emphasizes purity of fruit, finely textured tannins, and the distinctive character of Morey-Saint-Denis.
Investment and Collectibility
La Forge de Tart holds a distinctive position among collectible Burgundy Premier Cru wines. Its association with the historic Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole, limited vineyard origins, and meticulous production contribute to its appeal among serious Burgundy enthusiasts. The 2023 vintage is particularly noteworthy for its refined balance, impressive critical reception, and the inclusion of carefully selected fruit from the estate's prestigious vineyard. Its concentrated fruit, structured tannins, and vibrant freshness support excellent potential for long-term cellaring.
