2018 La Chapelle d’Ausone – Precision from a Legendary Saint-Emilion Estate
The 2018 La Chapelle d’Ausone offers a refined interpretation of Saint-Emilion from one of Bordeaux’s most revered addresses. Produced from select parcels associated with Chateau Ausone, this wine reflects the estate’s limestone-driven terroir while presenting a slightly more approachable profile in its youth, without sacrificing structure or longevity.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with dark plum, black cherry, graphite, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, the wine is supple yet focused, combining ripe Merlot fruit with mineral tension and finely textured tannins. Hints of cocoa, spice, and crushed stone emerge through a long, controlled finish that highlights balance rather than excess.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is dominated by Merlot with a portion of Cabernet Franc, sourced from clay-limestone slopes that define Ausone’s identity. Fermentation is conducted with careful extraction, followed by aging in French oak barrels to preserve freshness and aromatic clarity. The warm 2018 growing season delivered ripe fruit while the limestone soils maintained energy and structure.
Investment & Collectibility
La Chapelle d’Ausone remains a highly sought-after Right Bank wine, offering pedigree and scarcity tied to one of Saint-Emilion’s most historic estates. The 2018 vintage has already drawn attention for its balance and long-term aging potential, making it attractive to collectors focused on modern Bordeaux.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 2018 Bordeaux vintage is known for its richness tempered by freshness. In Saint-Emilion, these conditions produced wines of depth and polish, with La Chapelle d’Ausone standing out for its restraint and precision.
