1999 Masseto Toscana IGT – Mature Super Tuscan Benchmark
The 1999 Masseto Toscana IGT represents an important early release from one of Italy’s most collectible estates. Produced from Merlot grown on the clay-rich slopes overlooking the Tuscan coast near Bolgheri, Masseto established itself during the 1990s as a defining force within the Super Tuscan category. The 1999 vintage now offers a mature expression marked by depth, structure, and evolving complexity.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet reveals aromas of black plum, dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is layered and composed, with mature dark fruit framed by integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Earthy mineral tones and subtle spice emerge through a long, refined finish that reflects both site and bottle age.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Produced entirely from Merlot planted on blue clay soils, Masseto benefits from a vineyard site known for producing wines of concentration and structural tension. Fermentation is carried out with careful parcel selection before aging in French oak barrels to refine texture and preserve aromatic precision. The 1999 growing season delivered balanced ripeness and steady phenolic development.
Investment & Collectibility
Early vintages of Masseto remain highly sought after among collectors due to their scarcity and historical importance within the Super Tuscan movement. The 1999 vintage continues to attract interest from buyers focused on mature Italian wines with established provenance and long-term secondary market demand.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1999 Tuscany vintage produced wines with structure and longevity. At Masseto, these conditions resulted in a refined and cellar-worthy expression with impressive aging capacity.
