Opus One 2006, Napa Valley, USA

Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.
Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to un-compromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.

VINTAGE 2006
The vintage of 2006 saw the lowest average maximum temperature and lowest average solar radiation in twenty-five growing seasons. A saturated black-purple, the 2006 Opus One shows aromas of fresh cut roses, licorice, dark chocolate, blackberry pie, smoked bacon and sassafras.
Simultaneously silky and dense on the palate, this un-fined wine offers flavors of cassis, espresso and zesty black cherry. The persistently smooth yet expansive finish of the 2006 promises long life in the bottle.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

(Rating 93+). The 2006 comes across as a bigger, more structured wine than the 2007. The tannins are bolder, more dramatic, and more present. The wine displays impressive depth, not the velvety elegance of the 2007, but is a more muscular wine that begs for 2-3 years of cellaring and should drink well for 20-25 years. Reviewed by: Robert M. Parker, Jr. Issue date: December 2009. Drinking window: 2011- 2036.

Vinous

I expected the 2006 Opus One to be more reticent than it actually is. Dark plums, black cherries, licorice, tar and smoke all take shape as the 2006 opens up in the glass. Overall, this is a supple Opus One with good complexity but less of the personality of the best wines of the year. In 2006 the blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. The style is relatively juicy, partly owing to the highest presence of Merlot ever. Reviewed by: Antonio Galloni. Issue date: June 2013. Drinking window: 2014 - 2026.
