WINEMAKER NOTES
1998 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia - Mature Bolgheri Precision
The 1998 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia is a mature expression of one of Italy's most important collectible wines. Produced on the Tuscan coast near Bolgheri, Sassicaia combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in a style known for measured power, savory detail, and long development in bottle. The 1998 vintage now shows the layered character expected from carefully stored examples of this historic label.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet brings together blackcurrant, dried cherry, cedar, tobacco, olive, and warm stone. On the palate, the wine is composed and medium to full bodied, with mature dark fruit, integrated tannins, and balanced acidity. Notes of leather, spice, graphite, and Mediterranean herbs develop through a persistent finish that remains refined rather than heavy.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
The wine was made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grown on varied limestone, marl, pebble, and clay soils between approximately 80 and 400 metres above sea level. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by about two weeks of skin contact. The wine then matured for 23 months in French oak, including 40 percent new wood.
Collectibility and Cellaring
Older Sassicaia vintages remain sought after for their provenance, historical importance, and established secondary-market following. The 1998 release offers particular appeal to collectors seeking a mature Super Tuscan with developed complexity and a clear connection to the rise of Bolgheri as a fine-wine region.
Vintage Context and Accolades
The 1998 season was warm and dry from late spring through harvest, producing ripe Cabernet fruit with concentration and structure. Harvest began in early September and continued for three weeks without interruption.

We provide free shipping insurance for loss or visible damage during transit, subject to carrier terms and conditions.
Shipping insurance does not cover deterioration in wine condition resulting from heat exposure, freezing temperatures, temperature fluctuations, carrier delays, missed delivery attempts, carrier holds, or other temperature-related transit conditions. Please review our Temperature Protection & Shipping Policy for more information.
