2019 Maybach Family Vineyards Materium Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, California, USA

FIFTEENTH RELEASE of Maybach Materium, sourced from a single block of Weitz Vineyard, 1000 feet above the Silverado Trail on the eastern hillside of Oakville. The vines here struggle to grow in shallow soil among boulders and stones, resulting in a deeply concentrated, elegantly textured Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Another spectacular example of varietal and site in the 2019 Materium. Year after year, this dramatic mountaintop vineyard block in the eastern Oakville hills produces an iconic Cabernet Sauvignon of the highest order. The wine possesses a decadent purple-red color in the glass. Sultry aromas emerge in waves, suggesting notes of licorice, star anise, cedar, and forest floor.

The luxurious palate delves even deeper, with interwoven notes of kirsch, macerated blackberry, oolong tea, dark chocolate shavings and lavender. This wine delivers a seamless trajectory, remarkable precision, depth, power and endless enjoyment for serious wine collectors and aficionados.

While still young, the 2019 Materium is drinking well today, but the patient will be rewarded with experiencing how this iconic wine develops over the decades.

If you can believe it, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium might be even better, and this beauty tops out my scale. An incredible array of red, blue, and black fruits as well as unsmoked tobacco, iron, hazelnut, and toasty oak all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, ultra-fine, building texture, perfect tannins, and a huge finish. This pure Napa Valley magic is going to benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and drink brilliantly for another 20-30 years. If this doesn't do it for you, I'd avoid Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon! (Rating 97-99+) A barrel sample, the deep purple-black colored 2019 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautifully nuanced nose of rose oil, bouquet garni, crushed rocks and cinnamon toast over a core of Morello cherries, fresh blackcurrants and black raspberries, plus a waft of forest floor. The full-bodied palate is perfumed with loads of floral and dried herbs accents lifting the dark, rich fruit, supported by finely grained tannins and soft acidity, finishing long and fragrant.
