Ageing
It is carefully aged for 12 months in barrels of which two-thirds are new each vintage.

The wines of La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou come from the vineyard of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. This exceptional Médoc cru is spread between the river to the east and the center and west of the AOC Saint-Julien area. The estate owes its name to its "beautiful pebbles" which, due to their preponderance of quartz, give lean soils.

It is precisely this “agrological” poverty, as Professor René Pijassou wrote, that gives them great value for wine production. To the east, the plots occupy the Médoc hilltops just above the estuary, while those in the epicenter benefit from a microclimate created by the small stream of La Mouline which crosses the appellation in the middle, from the west. east, to flow into the Gironde.

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is an original expression of the terroirs of Ducru-Beaucaillou. A one-of-a-kind cuvée. The elitist procedures of Ducru-Beaucaillou are at work here. The same passion too, that of a team dedicated to excellence.

A high-end cuvée that perfectly reveals its exceptional terroir. This predominantly Cabernet-Sauvignon blended wine (around 60% each year) is embellished with black Merlot (35% to 37%) as well as a gently spicy touch of Petit Verdot (3% to 5%).

Powerful, silky, very aromatic, La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou seduces with its nose, its balance, its remarkable finesse and its persistence. A great cuvée that awakens, charms, introduces to the Borie label.

Jeb Dunnuck

Rating (93 - 95) The second wine of this great château, the 2022 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on two-thirds Merlot with the balance mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, raised in 80% new French oak. Hitting 14% natural alcohol, its vivid purple hue is followed by stunning aromatics of cassis, blueberries, tobacco, graphite, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied on the palate, it brings plenty of concentration and structure yet is balanced and has a great mid-palate and outstanding length. If there was a ranking for the top second wines in Bordeaux, this would be in the top handful of releases. Reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck, Issue date: May 2023. Drinking window: N/A.

Rating (90 - 92) The 2022 La Croix de Beaucaillou opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and fresh mint, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit framed by chunky tannins, it's a blend of 66% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. Rating (92 - 94) The 2022 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is super-expressive. The aromatics and tannin show strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections, but the blend actually favors Merlot in this vintage, as yields in the Cabernet were on the low side. This serious, potent Saint-Julien is going to need a bit of time to fully come together, but it is certainly impressive. Reviewed by Antonio Galloni, Issue date: April 2023.
