WINEMAKER NOTES
2001 Chateau Ausone – Limestone Precision from Saint-Emilion
The 2001 Chateau Ausone reflects the quiet authority of one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive estates. Perched on steep limestone slopes above Saint-Emilion, Ausone produces wines defined by structure, restraint, and longevity. The 2001 vintage offers a composed, classically proportioned expression that continues to reward careful cellaring.
Tasting Notes
Aromatically refined, the wine opens with red and black currant, graphite, dried flowers, and subtle earth. On the palate, it is layered yet controlled, showing fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that frame notes of dark cherry, mineral, and gentle spice. The finish is persistent and savory, revealing the linear precision that characterizes mature Ausone.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is driven by Cabernet Franc with Merlot in a supporting role, sourced from old vines rooted in pure limestone soils. Low yields, careful extraction, and aging in French oak barrels contribute to the wine’s clarity and structural definition. The cooler profile of the 2001 growing season favored balance and aromatic complexity over sheer power.
Investment & Collectibility
Chateau Ausone remains among the most tightly held names in Bordeaux, with extremely limited production and strong global demand. The 2001 vintage stands as a compelling option for collectors seeking a mature, terroir-driven Saint-Emilion with proven aging credentials.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 2001 Bordeaux vintage is often described as understated and classic, producing wines of finesse and harmony. At Ausone, these conditions translated into a wine built for long-term evolution rather than early impact.
