WINEMAKER NOTES
2023 Chateau Lafleur - Exceptional Pomerol from a Rare Estate
The 2023 Chateau Lafleur is a compelling expression of one of Pomerol's smallest and most coveted estates. Produced by the Guinaudeau family from a remarkably small vineyard, Lafleur is distinguished by its unusually high proportion of Bouchet, the estate's historic selection of Cabernet Franc, alongside Merlot. The 2023 combines concentration with precision, freshness, and remarkable finesse, reinforcing Lafleur's position among Bordeaux's most collectible wines.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet unfolds with blackberry, cherry, plum, cassis, violet, and iris, followed by tobacco, licorice, mint, and subtle cocoa. The palate is deep yet remarkably energetic, with pure dark and red fruit framed by exceptionally fine tannins. Graphite, black pepper, earth, and mineral notes add complexity, while vibrant acidity carries the wine through a long, fragrant, and highly focused finish.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
The 2023 Lafleur is composed of 54% Bouchet, or Cabernet Franc, and 46% Merlot. The Merlot was harvested September 7 and 8, followed by the Bouchet on September 17. The wine was matured for approximately 15 months in barrel, with about 25% new oak, allowing the vineyard's distinctive character and natural structure to remain at the forefront.
Investment and Collectibility
Chateau Lafleur is produced in extremely limited quantities and commands sustained international demand. Its tiny production, distinctive vineyard composition, long aging potential, and exceptional critical reputation make each vintage highly desirable among serious Bordeaux collectors. The acclaimed 2023 release offers particular appeal for long-term cellaring and collectors building verticals of benchmark Pomerol.
Vintage Insights and Accolades
The 2023 vintage produced a Lafleur defined by intensity without excessive weight. Critics have consistently highlighted its purity, refined tannins, floral character, and exceptional length, with the wine expected to develop over several decades.
