WINEMAKER NOTES
2023 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia - 100-Point Bolgheri Icon
The 2023 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia is a compelling release of one of Italy's most celebrated wines. Produced on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, Sassicaia helped establish the modern Super Tuscan category and ultimately became the only Italian estate wine to receive its own dedicated appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. The 2023 combines Cabernet-driven structure with remarkable freshness, aromatic complexity, and the refined character that has defined Sassicaia for generations.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet unfolds with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, lavender, and violet, accompanied by sage, rosemary, cedar, and Mediterranean herbs. Layers of crushed stone, tobacco, spice, and subtle citrus add complexity. Medium to full bodied, the palate is precise and energetic, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity, dark fruit, and pronounced mineral tension. The finish is long and refined, emphasizing elegance and freshness over sheer weight.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
The 2023 Sassicaia is composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc. The estate's vineyards sit at approximately 100 to 400 meters above sea level on varied soils that include limestone, marl, stones, and clay. The vintage underwent extended maceration, followed by maturation in French oak barriques, allowing the wine to develop structure while preserving its distinctive aromatic character and freshness.
Investment and Collectibility
Sassicaia holds a singular position in Italian fine wine, supported by its historic importance, global recognition, limited production, and established secondary-market following. The 2023 is especially notable for receiving a perfect Wine Advocate score, placing it among the most critically acclaimed Sassicaia releases and strengthening its appeal for collectors seeking long-term cellar potential.
Vintage Insights and Accolades
The 2023 growing season presented significant challenges, including a cold winter, elevated rainfall, and disease pressure that required strict fruit selection and reduced yields. Despite those conditions, the resulting Sassicaia displays exceptional purity, brightness, and balance, with critics emphasizing its elegance and capacity for extended development.
